Spades: Calculating Rating Points

Getting Started in a Rated Room
In the beginning of a rated game, if a computer player is detected, then the game will not be rated. Four people are needed for a game to be rated. During a game, if a player leaves or is dropped, the three remaining players can use the voting tool to agree whether or not to wait for that player to return. Players are presented the options "Wait" and "Don't Wait."

If the remaining players select "Don't Wait," they will not receive rating points, and the player who left the game will be charged with an incomplete game. If all remaining players hit "Wait," then they must wait for that person to come back and complete the game.

Calculating Rating Points
The Zone Rating System has its own formula for calculating rating points for games won or lost in Spades. You begin with 1600 rating points. Your rating points will increase when you win a game and decrease when you lose a game. To receive the maximum 32 rating points for a single game, you must beat opponents who have an average of 400 or more rating points than you have.

Here are the formulas used to calculate Spades rating points for won and lost games.

Variables:
Since Spades is played in teams, your rating is calculated by taking the average ratings from the opposing team players.

R n is your new rating.

R 1 is your rating before the game.

R 2 is the average of your opponents' ratings before the game.

f = max [min [(R2-R1) / 400, 1], -1]

If you win a game:

R n = R 1 + max [16 * (1 + f), 1]

Through this formula, you are guaranteed at least +1 point for each game won. Want to move up quickly in ranking? Challenge and beat players with an of average 400 more points than you have. When R2 - R1 is 400 points or more, f = 1. Plug in f = 1 into the win equation, and you will get 32 points added to your current rating. So if you win a game, you can receive anywhere between 1 and 32 rating points.

If you lose a game:

R n = R 1 + min [16 * (-1 + f), -1]

Through this formula, you will lose at least 1 point for each game lost, unless your rating is 100 points. The rating program will never drop your rating below 100 rating points.

If you tie:

R n = R 1 + (16 * f)
