Tom Clancy -- The Man

Thomas L. Clancy, Jr. has been able to literally live the American version of Cinderella. He was working as an independent insurance agent living with his wife in Maryland. He was inspired by the actual attempted defection of a Soviet ship to write Hunt for Red October. It was picked up by a small U.S. Naval press house in 1984, and then began to make the rounds through military circles. It finally ended up in President Ronald Regan's hands who recommended it as “the perfect yarn.” This ringing endorsement has helped to make the book a bestseller, allowing Tom Clancy to fully realize his destiny as a very prolific techno-militaristic writer.

His books highlight intricate details of military hardware previously only known by those at the Pentagon. He combines these realistic details with a strong understanding of the military mind, giving us highly entertaining stories.

His writing has not stopped at the fictional genre, either. Clancy also writes non-fiction titles which provide an in-depth look at the modern military machine of the United States.
