| Red Storm's Rainbow Six Development Team Speaks Up! | |
|
What could be better than a best-selling game that allows you to be part of an anti-terrorist group sneaking into dangerous hostage situations? How about talking with the developers who made the game? We were able to talk with the leader of Team Sherman_RSE of Red Storm Entertainment. Their commander, Lucas, shared with us some of his team's successes and stories from the heart of Red Storm land.
The MSN Gaming Zone would like to thank Team Sherman_RSE for sharing with us.
Zone: How many people are on your team?
Sherman: 17 Note from the Zone: They are not taking applications for new members. Zone: What's your favorite scenario in single-player? Sherman: I think it would be Mission 2: the Congo Mansion. Zone: What's your favorite scenario in multiplayer? Sherman: M14, the Amazon. It can be played all-out fast or more strategic. It was designed to appeal to many different styles of play. Zone: What was the hardest thing about developing R6? Sherman: Breaking new ground. We were developing our own engine while trying to design our levels. That led to some guessing early on, and we were forced to change some level things, due to engineering changes. Zone: What's something comical that happened during development? Sherman: I think that the last three months of development were kind of comical. Everyone was here for 14 to 18 hours a day, every day, and people were just getting "weird." And of course [there was] our trip to Hechler&Koch International Training Headquarters. I got a good chuckle watching people that had never fired a gun before try it for the first time, especially the fully automatic MP5! Zone: Where do you see R6 going? Sherman: I see it paving the way for new concepts and thinking in the FPS genre. And, of course, more R6-related games. :-) Zone: Any advice for fledgling game developers? Sherman: Keep at it. It may seem like things are moving slow or not going to work out, but keep trying to jam your foot in the door. It will work eventually. Zone: What's your background? Sherman: I have a sporadic educational background. I started off with Architectural Design and then moved into computer graphics/animation. Then I worked for a small company designing Virtual Reality games for arcades. Zone: How did you "train" to do R6? Sherman: There were a few of us who have always had an interest in firearms, me included. I actually used to sell them at an outdoors store a few years ago. We didn't have anyone on the team that had prior military experience, but there are a few that have in Red Storm, and we used some VERY good outside resources. Zone: What are your favorite dress-out options (guns, clothing, gear, etc.)? Sherman: The general consensus, here with the R6 team, is to use the CAR-15/HK .45 silenced, frags or flashbangs, heartbeat sensor. That will get you out of any situation! Zone: What other games do you enjoy? Sherman: I really enjoy a lot of RTS games. C&C stuff, Age of Empires, Commandos, some other FPSs, like Half-Life, Unreal, and Shogo, and NHL 98/99 for my sports fix. Zone: Tell us something unique about your group as a clan. Sherman: Other than the obvious, we use strategy and plans. Each team member usually has a function, and it is his responsibility to carry out that function. Someone, usually me, is designated at Sniper, Point, Rear Guard Scout, and so on. We will split off into teams and carry out different missions if we want as well. This lets us do coordinated assaults from many different sides. Zone: Anything else you want to tell us? Sherman: The R6 Development Team would like to thank all you guys/gals playing R6 for your support. We really appreciate it! See you |
