Bulletin Boards on Kasparov vs. The World

Online bulletin boards, known as BBS's or "the boards," are public e-mail groups. Users post messages which are seen by everyone who has signed on, and then reply to any or all of the messages.

The online bulletin boards are the most popular feature of Kasparov vs. The World. Since the beginning of the historic game on June 21, more than 35,000 messages have been posted. Over 100,000 page views are registered every day. Nate Gehl, Community Producer of MSNBC Chat Rooms, says "If I had to rank the Kasparov vs. the World boards against other MSNBC bulletin boards, they would be #2 or #3 overall." Not bad considering the huge number of boards found on the World Wide Web.

Kasparov vs. The World offers two bulletin boards, one for general discussion of the event: http:// bbs.msnbc.com/bbs/kasparov-general/index.asp and one devoted to strategy in the great effort to defeat the World Champion. When you log on to the World Team Strategy Bulletin Board at http: //bbs.msnbc.com/bbs/kasparov-team/index.asp, you see something like this:

In my opinion GK is trying to create the threat of Queening his pawn after he trades Queens and his Bishop for our Knight. I think if we allow these exchanges, GK will push his h pawn guarded by his King, eventually forcing us to trade our Bishop for the h pawn. In the meantime, he will allow us to take the rest of his pawns and will take all of our pawns with his Rook. The end result he is trying for is a King and Rook for GK and just a King for us.davidlee

He is responding to Dummy's message posted on Aug. 3. Notice Dummy's reference to "the boards" meaning "bulletin boards" and "good posts" meaning " interesting messages." As always, the Internet is a platform for new lingo.

If you want to make some comment on this message, click the Reply button, which opens the page at /scripts2/post.dll. Simply type in your name, e-mail address and your message in the boxes provided and hit the Post Message button. It's very fast and easy. Then return to the postings page and look for your alias, which is the first part of your e-mail address. It's quite exciting the first time you see your own message on public view - and you wonder how people around the world are going to reply. It doesn't take long to find out.

In addition to Reply, your other options - Prev Message, All Posts, and Next Message - allow maximum flexibility in navigating the board. When you click on an underlined header to read the message, you also get a Message Thread sequence like the one after this posting:

Does anyone know where we can get the scores of her games. I'd be interested to see if she played Qe6 in any of the lost games...

Just for the record, her opponents would have to allow her to go down this line. Not too smart if you consider she has analyzed way more than any of her competition possibly could have. She can't just willy-nilly play Qe6.

Use the general board as if you were on the Strategy board - choose a message and click on it, read the message and reply or go on. This is a great way to get a lot of information and opinions in a very short time and to share your views on everything related to the Kasparov event.

You never know who's reading your posts; Moderator Danny King and our four Analysts are active on the boards every day. Irina Krush and Danny often write, "the talk on the boards has favored.... " or "as blimpy wrote yesterday on the strategy board....." So when you sign on, you are really influencing your colleagues - and the outcome of the game - while having a lot of fun participating in the world's most exciting game of chess.
