Golf '99 Game Tips

We know you'll have no trouble jumping right into the action of Microsoft Golf 1999 Edition. Its intuitive interface, realistic environment, and improved playability will lead you flawlessly through the links. However, we thought we'd give you a few tips that we found to be helpful while we were playing.

  • When you are ready to play a course on the Internet Gaming Zone, you'll want to be prepared with the proper course installed on your machine ahead of time. Sometimes it's useful in your Chat advertisement to specify which course you want to play (for example, "Come Play Eagle Heights on 18"). That way you can avoid the delay of installing the course from the CD while others are waiting.
  • All of the courses offered in Golf '99 are 18-hole courses, except "The Preserve 9." In order for your score to be reported to cumulative statistics, you must play 18 holes. So if you choose The Preserve 9, enter "Eighteen" in the Holes list and you'll play through the course twice.
  • When you choose a wind condition, remember that the wind speed will fluctuate during the round, but never in the middle of your shot. Direction is constant through the round.
  • Club Selection Tip: Even the best players sometimes use 4 and 5 woods instead of the standard 2 and 3 irons that are included in the standard bag.
  • The Auto-Caddy's choices are based on the position of your aiming pole. If you move the aiming pole, the Auto-Caddy will change your club to match when you release the mouse button. You can always override the caddy's choice.
  • What's in a spin? Once you set your spin setting, it will become your usual spin on every shot you take in the game except putts. You can adjust your draw (ball flight curving right to left) and fade (ball flight curving left to right).
  • When you're using the Sim Swing, you can have game strengths in 10 playing areas. For example, high Driver strength means you will hit more accurately with your driver, but not necessarily any longer. The level you set at the beginning of the game (Amateur, for example) will automatically set your strengths to overall "2" on the scale of one to five.
  • On the Zone, if one of the players quits the game, the host has the option of allowing a computer to take the player's place. If the host says no to continuing with a computer player, the remaining players, including the host, will return to the Zone game launchpad, where they can hit "Resume" or "Cancel."
  • Host notes: Don't rush through the pre-game screens too quickly; you may leave a few players in the dust and lose them. Wait until you see their names on the player list. Also, if a player is taking too long to hit a ball, you can boot them from the game. Perhaps they were disconnected, their ISP is acting up, or it's just a ghost player. Try to communicate through chat first.
  • When approaching the green, try experimenting with the Height button to give a little backspin and arc to your ball. It will help it stop solidly on the green instead of having it roll off into the rough.
  • You may have played Bingo Bango Bongo, but have you ever heard of Super Bongo? The wager amount is multiplied by the hole number. Golf '99 keeps track of which player wins each specific bet, such as longest drive, first on green, etc.
