The Federation's specialties are science and diplomacy. Explore as much of the galaxy as possible to give your empire a better chance of meeting new races and making treaties. The more treaties you sign, the more trade routes you can make. Save most of your credits to improve relations with minor races until they sign a membership treaty. Concentrate on one minor race at a time; then use the extra income you gain from that race to pay the next race. Specializing in areas of research will move you ahead of other empires technologically. Since the Federation has multiple special research structures, make sure you take full advantage of your research capability by building your research infrastructure as quickly as possible. Avoid wars and conflicts as much as possible, as they will make your people unhappy and unproductive. Some minor races may even terminate their membership in the Federation. Federation ships have strong shields which give them a unique advantage in tactical combat. Unless you quickly win or lose the battle, engage the enemy and do as much damage as you can until your shields get low. By this point, you've probably penetrated the enemy's shields and inflicted some hull damage. If you are in danger of taking more damage, order your ships with weak shields to retreat from the battle or choose the Evade command. Even if your whole fleet retreats, you will have an advantage in your next encounter. Shield damage instantly repairs between battles, whereas hull damage takes considerable time to fix. |
