Age of Empires: Calculating Rating Points

The Zone Rating System has its own formula for calculating rating points for games won or lost in Age of Empires . You begin with 1600 rating points. Your rating points will increase when you win a game and decrease when you lose a game To receive the maximum 32 rating points for a single game, you must beat an opponent who has 400 or more rating points than you do.

Here are the formulas used to calculate Age of Empires rating points for won and lost games.

Variables:
Rn is your new rating.

R1 is your rating before the game.

R2 is your opponent's rating before the game.

f is a calculated point value between -1 and 1.

f = max [min [(R2-R1) / 400, 1], -1]

If you win a game:

Rn = R1 + max [16 * (1 + f), 1]

Through this formula, you are guaranteed at least +1 point for each game won. Want to move up quickly in ranking? Challenge and beat a player who has 400 more points than you do. When R2 - R1 is greater than 400 points, f =1. Plug in f =1 into the win equation, and you will get 32 points added to your current rating. So if you win a game, you can receive anywhere between 1 and 32 rating points.

If you lose a game:

Rn = R1 +min [16 * (-1 + f), -1]

Through this formula, you will lose at least 1 point for each game lost, unless your rating is 100 points. The rating program will never drop your rating below 100 rating points.

If you play teams in a game, your rating is calculated by taking the average ratings from the opposing team players. Let's look at the following example:

Players A and B are on Team 1.

Players C and D are on Team2.

Team 1 beats team 2.

To calculate the win for player A on team 1:

  1. Use the win equation above, and separately calculate the rating for player A's win over player C and for A's win over player D.
  2. Average the two ratings calculated in step 1. This gives you the new rating for player A.
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to calculate the rating points for player B.
To calculate the loss to player C on team 2:

  1. Use the loss equation above, and separately calculate the rating for player C's loss to player A and for C's loss to player B.
  2. Average the ratings calculated in step 1. This gives you the new rating for player C.
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to calculate the rating points for player D.
